An defence minister has stated that the MoD is currently looking into the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, while personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret information in any vehicles.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
In a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese cars.
He stated that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all contemporary vehicles.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Defence Background
This announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and cause disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The broader defence environment underscores the significance of strong measures and vigilance in all areas of government operations, from transport usage to communication habits.
